University of Calcutta (CU), Kolkata PHD Journalism and Mass Communication Admissions 2018

University of Calcutta (CU), Kolkata invites applications for admission to Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Program in Journalism and Mass Communication for the academic session 2018

Eligibility Criteria

Candidates for admission to the Ph.D. program shall have a Master’s degree or a degree declared equivalent to the Master’s degree by the corresponding statutory regulatory body of this University, with at least 55% marks in aggregate or its equivalent grade ‘B’ in the UGC 7-point scale (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed)

A relaxation of 5% of marks, from 55% to 50%, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, may be allowed for those belonging to SC/ST/OBC (non-creamy layer)/Differently-abled and other categories of candidates as per the decision of the UGC from time to time, or for those who had obtained their Master’s degree prior to 19th September, 1991. The eligibility marks of 55% (or an equivalent grade in a point scale wherever grading system is followed) and the relaxation of 5% to the categories mentioned above are permissible based only on the qualifying marks without including the grace mark procedures

Selection Procedure

Selection will be made on the basis of a Written Test followed by an Interview

Those who will qualify in the Written Test will have to appear for an Interview. Candidates with NET/SET/ M. Phil are not required to appear for the Written Test and are eligible to apply for appearing in the Interview directly


Seats are reserved for SC/ST/OBC-A/OBC-B/ Physically Handicapped (PH) candidates as per the West Bengal Higher Education Institutions (Reservation in Admission) Rules, 2013

Structure of the Exam

The question paper will be of MCQ type containing 100 questions of 2 marks each. For each wrong answer 1 mark will be deducted

Topics for the Test:

Paper I (100 marks, 50 questions): General Knowledge, Current Affairs, Reasoning Ability, Comprehension Skill

Paper II (100 marks, 50 Questions):Journalism and Mass Communication, Research Techniques, etc.

Questions are set in English

The Qualifying Marks for the Written Test: 50% (for General candidates); 45% (for OBC-A and OBC-B candidates); 37.5% (for SC/ST candidates) in individual papers to qualify for the interview

Interested candidates should apply in the prescribed application format made available on the University Website

The Application Form, duly filled in, is to be submitted (Working days/Monday-Friday, 11.00 am -2.30 pm) to the Head, Department of Journalism and Mass Communication, University of Calcutta, after payment of Rs. 100/- only in cash to be deposited in the Calcutta University Cash Counter by challan

List of candidates with NET/SET/ M. Phil for appearing directly for interview: 09th January 2018 at 1pm

Publication of the list of candidates obtained qualifying marks in the Written Test: 10th January 2018 at 3pm

Date of Interview: 13th January 2018 at 11am (Venue: Department of Journalism and Mass Communication)

Publication of the list of candidates selected for enrolment: 16th January 2018 at 4.00 pm
