Mahatma Gandhi University (M.G.U) is established through Meghalaya State legislative Act, 2010 (Meghalaya Act No.6 of 2011), published in the Gazette of Meghalaya vide No.LL (B).138/2010/41. The Promoting body of MGU has vast experience in the field of Education. University is setup with an objective of providing best quality education to the students.
Mahatma Gandhi University is empowered to award degrees as specified by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under section 22 of the UGC Act 1956.

Categories of Ph. D. candidates and place of research:
There shall be three categories of Ph.D. candidates as listed below:
a) Full -time
b) Part-time (Internal)
c) Part-time (External)
A candidate will be allowed to submit his Ph. D. Thesis only after two years from the date of registration as notified by the University for the full Time Candidates. A candidate will be allowed to submit his Ph. D. Thesis only after three years from the date of registration as notified by the university for the Part Time Candidates. This period may be reduced to eighteen months if the candidate has a M Phil degree from anyuniversity.
Admission for registration to the Ph.D. degree will be made by the Vice- Chancellor on the Recommendation of the Research Committee. Each eligible candidate for registration to Ph.D. course in University Teaching Department shall submit his/her application for registration on the prescribed form to the Head of the Department, along with Demand Draft towards payment of prescribed fees for entrance test, through his supervisor submitting a scheme or outline of the subject he proposes to investigate with a statement of work and any prior work that he may have done on the subject.
